Why People Die

It has been said that the only two things that are certain in life are death and taxes. This statement is not entirely true. Many people have cheated on their taxes but absolutely no one cheats death. The Bible says that death is unavoidable: “man is destined to die” (Hebrews 9:27). Death certainly is the great equalizer. Regardless of how rich and famous or poor and obscure someone is the fact remains that every person is going to die one day. Because of this reality one of the greatest fears that people have is the fear of death. The Bible calls death “the king of terrors” (Job 18:14) and says that people live their entire lives as slaves to the fear of death (Hebrews 2:15). Because of the reality of death and humanity’s fear of experiencing this imminent event, one of the most significant and often asked questions is: WHY DO PEOPLE DIE?

The Bible gives us a very clear answer to this sobering question. When God created the very first human beings, Adam and Eve, they were created with the ability to live forever. Humanity did once possess the blessing of immortality. Shortly after their creation God warned Adam and Eve of how they could lose their lives and experience death: “…but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die” (Genesis 2:17). Eventually Adam and Eve both chose to rebel against God and they ate the fruit of the forbidden tree: “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it” (Genesis 3:6). Because of this act of disobedience the curse of death came into the entire human race: “…sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). God, the holy and righteous Judge of the universe, pronounced a death sentence over humanity for this act of disobedience.

The answer to the question, “Why do people die?” is quite simple and can ultimately be summed up in one word: SIN. Every human being will die because of sin. Again, death was able to enter into the human race because of sin (Romans 5:12). Adam and Eve died because of sin and you will experience death at some point for the very same reason. The Bible says, “The soul who sins is the one who will die” (Ezekiel 18:4). The Bible also clearly declares that “…all have sinned…” (Romans 3:23) and that “…the wages (the result) of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23). When the Bible speaks of death being a result of sin it is actually referring to two distinct realities. The first form of death is physical and is when our heart stops beating and our earthly life comes to an end. The Bible also describes a second death: “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death” (Revelation 21:8). This second death is after our earthly life and is an eternal form of punishment for our sins.

The Bible defines sin as breaking God’s Laws, i.e. the Ten Commandments: “Everyone who sins breaks the law” (I John 3:4). Let’s see if you have sinned and deserve death and this eternal punishment. Answer the following questions honestly and listen to your conscience. Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever stolen anything, irrespective of its value? Jesus said, “I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). Have you ever looked at someone with lust? The Bible says that if anyone hates another person they are a murderer

(I John 3:15). Have you ever hated anyone? If you have answered “Yes” to the previous questions, then you have admitted that you are a liar, a thief, an adulterer and a murderer and we’ve only looked at four of the Ten Commandments. If God were to judge you by this standard would you be innocent or guilty? You know that you would be guilty and deserve the eternal punishment of the second death.

The good news is that God loves you so much that He has made a way for you to avoid the second death and even live forever with Him in heaven: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus Christ came to earth and died a criminal’s death not because He had broken the Law, but because you had. He took your punishment on the cross so you could be forgiven. In order to be forgiven and avoid the second death you need to do two things. The Bible says that we “must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus” (Acts 20:21). The first step is to repent (Luke 13:3). To repent means to admit your guilt and confess your sins to God. Be specific. It also means that you forsake your sins and begin to obey Christ. The second thing you need to do is put your faith completely in Jesus and His work on the cross. You need to trust in Jesus the same way you would trust a parachute if you had to jump from a burning airplane in mid-air. You know that it is the only thing that will save you (John 3:36). Pray sincerely to God and do this today because you may not have tomorrow. Once you have made Jesus Christ your Lord begin to read the Bible daily, obey what you read and remember the words of Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:25-26).
